Message from Julie Ann Shoeman
I am truly grateful to be part of the pbase community. I have met many talented photographers and artists here, and several of you have challenged me to work harder and think more creatively about my photography.
My journey began in 2003 when I purchased my first Canon 10D digital camera. I still remember the day my children and I left the store and went straight to Meadowlark Gardens so I could begin taking photos. I can still recall the feeling of holding that camera in my hands and the quiet thrill of capturing a butterfly resting on a lavender bloom. More than twenty years later, that same sense of wonder remains. Exploring the world God created continues to stir my spirit. We truly live in the midst of magnificent creation.
I was born Deaf, and photography has always felt like a natural extension of how I experience the world. Because I do not hear it, I observe it. I notice how light shifts across a field, the tension in a storm sky, or the stillness before movement. Photography allows me to feel deeply connected to nature through my eyes. It is not simply about capturing an image. It is about seeing fully and honoring what is already there.
My gear is simple. I use a primary Canon SLR camera with two lenses, usually a Canon zoom and my beloved Canon 85mm.
Photography remains a deep joy in my life. I hope that joy has been passed on to my children and to others who are learning. My second oldest daughter, Clarissa Hope, has developed a strong interest in photography and is becoming quite talented in her own right.
